August 21, 2017 -- No School: Holiday for Great American Solar Eclipse

After careful consideration and continued research, Saluda County Schools has decided to close all schools on Monday, August 21, 2017, the day of the Great American Solar Eclipse. We believe this is the best decision to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. There is a projected increase in visitation to South Carolina and possible traffic concerns which have the potential to impact our bus routes. Our decision to close schools is based, in part, on our desire to reduce the risk of students en route to their homes during the eclipse.  Read more about the travel projections here: https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/statistics/

Project Lead the Way and Floor Skimmers

Mr. Griffith’s Project Lead The Way students in the Design and Modeling class recently completed creating "Floor Skimmers".

These vehicles are designed to ride on a cushion of air as they glide along the floor.  Students used engineering drawings

and practiced precise measurements to craft accurate working models.  The more accurate and precise the student is, the

better the floor skimmer will preform. Once complete the students tested their floor skimmer in a contest to see who could

skim their vehicle the farthest.  Visit the gallery at the bottom of the school web page.

BreakoutEDU at SMS!

Ms. Sample's 6th grade science classes participated in a BreakoutEDU session to culminate their simple machine unit.

Breakout EDU creates ultra-engaging learning games for people of all ages. Games (Breakouts) teach teamwork, problem solving,

critical thinking, and troubleshooting by presenting participants with challenges that ignite their natural drive to problem-solve.

Breakouts are perfect for classrooms, staff trainings, dinner parties, and at home with the family! At the end of a Breakout,

your players will be eager for the next! Speciality K-12 Breakouts can be used to teach core academic subjects including math,

science, history, language arts and have embedded standards that apply problem solving strategies within a real world

OR collaborative context."

Escape the Bus Visits SMS

The iSchool initiative helps schools embrace technology and create a culture of lifelong learning. Escape the Bus is a mobile

component of the  iSchool initiative.  SMS students participated in the program when the bus visited our school on October 7.

You have 30 minutes to find all the clues hidden inside the “mobile classroom on wheels”! You will have to work as a team

in order to go through each station and solve the problem to discover the secrets of lifelong learning. In the process of

finding clues you will learn about new technology to use in the classroom, the importance of student voice, and the

history of iSchool Initiative. Most of all, you will have fun!

Kelli Taylor is the SMS Teacher of the Year AND Saluda School District's Teacher of the Year!

Ms. Taylor is Saluda Middle School’s teacher of the year for 2015-16. Although I have only known her for a few months, her hard work and dedication have been apparent. She is very conscientious to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that students are taken care of everyday. I know that with her involvement, any event we plan will be a success. She has already been successful in bringing the SOAR STEM education program to SMS. This program exposed our students to various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts and careers through exposure to military equipment.

Ms. Taylor’s attendance is impressive with very little absences and often one of the teachers with the least amount of absences every year. She has been a leader on common assessments at the school level and the teachers appreciate her willingness to always assist.

Ms. Taylor’s students would say that she is very caring and motivating. She is obsessed with everyone in class learning and participating. She does not believe in letting students fail and will do whatever it takes to motivate them in their learning. I would like to take this time to thank Ms. Taylor for her hard work and dedication to Saluda Middle School. She truly embodies many of the qualities that make Saluda Middle School such a great place to work and grow. Thank you, Ms. Taylor, and congratulations.
